Dismantling Siloes and Enhancing Leadership Skills

The Challenge

FROM FRACTIOUSNESS TO COLLABORATIVE

A leader of a city agency in a large US metropolis was overwhelmed by the complaints of interpersonal conflict he was fielding from the leadership team. Perceptions of unfair promotional practices and a legacy of cross-departmental disagreements had led to long-held grudges and frostiness between senior managers. For the health and success of the organization, he aspired to develop a more collaborative, de-siloed team as well as enhance individuals’ abilities to lead their departments.

Our Solution

We partnered to offer a 4-month leadership program for all 20 senior managers. Instead of aiming directly at the core issue, we facilitated workshops on self-awareness, coaching as a managerial skill, frameworks for productive conflict, and a small group innovation project. Through workshops, reflection activities, and small group coaching, this program deepened each manager's leadership of self and others and strengthened goodwill between departments.

Workshop Outcomes

As a result of the experience, 94% of senior managers reported that they felt the agency was more invested in them both personally and professionally. 89% developed greater insight into their own mindsets and tendencies, and how they interact with others. 72% gained more tools to navigate conflict or tension at work than they had before, and over half reported they forged stronger bonds with the other senior managers.

The leader who sought support reflected: "Through the challenging exercises the Ei team guided staff through, they were able to recognize the value in how differently we each process information, and how to bring their own skills to bear to work collaboratively for stronger solutions."

“Prior to engaging the Ei team, our Senior Managers had difficulty in reaching across the aisle to work collaboratively on solutions. Through the challenging exercises the EI team guided staff through, they were able to recognize the value in how differently we each process information, and how to bring our own skills to bear to work collaboratively for stronger solutions.”
